You know it's the simple things like this that can be prevented and if you do it right the first time you won't have to come back and do it again. This is just simply an inconvenience to pedestrians and looks silly! It's kind of embarassing if you think about it.

Yeh Michael - your article does a good job of pointing out that there are more effective ways to light streets and sidewalks. I tend to lean towards acorn lights over cobras purely out of aesthetic preference, and there are some other new light style that you mention and seem to work well, but no matter what we decide on light design, we can all agree that the light placement in this case is pathetic.

Jason - Yeh, if they are "thought out actions" then they are poorly thought out. It is clear that whoever is responsible for sidewalks and streetlamps in downtown does not take pedestrian issues seriously. It looks like they simply don't care. Today I saw another lamppost on the other side of downtown that was also in the center of a narrow sidewalk. In downtown, an area that the city claims they wish to make truly urban, pedestrian issues deserve consideration equal to that that cars receive - but the reality of what we see is that pedestrian considerations are very low on the totem pole.
